The story behind us

Daniel Mercer started Craftsman Home Interiors in 2011 after twelve years working as a finish carpenter and project supervisor for a mid-size general contractor in Portland. He had spent those years watching renovation projects go sideways not because of bad tradespeople, but because of poor coordination, vague scoping, and homeowners who were never told what was actually happening on their own job. He started the company with one truck, a small crew of three, and a straightforward idea: treat the homeowner's house the way you would treat your own.

The company grew steadily through referrals. By 2016, Craftsman Home Interiors had added a dedicated bathroom and tile crew and brought flooring installation in-house. The turning point came in the winter of 2018, when a client in Sellwood hired the team to restore a 1924 Craftsman bungalow that had been through three decades of mismatched renovations. That project took seven months and required matching original fir trim, rebuilding a damaged plaster ceiling, and sourcing period-appropriate hardware from a salvage yard in Northeast Portland. It was the kind of job that clarified what the company was actually good at: careful, detail-oriented work in homes that deserve to be treated with respect.

Today the team includes eight full-time tradespeople and two project leads, and the company serves homeowners across Portland, Lake Oswego, Beaverton, Tigard, and Gresham. Daniel still does the initial site visit on every project. The work has not changed much since 2011: show up on time, do what you said you would do, and leave the house better than you found it.
